FAQ / Contact

Montreal Linkup is a unique social group whose fundamental basis is courtesy, consideration and accountability.

We take RSVPs to events very seriously, because we want everyone in the group to have confidence in each other, and to be able to plan events based on this confidence.

After all, don't you want people to show up if they say they'll show up, and don't you prefer people you can truly count on?

Want to host an event? Please read the guidelines for hosting an event as well as the Linkup Good Hosting Guide.
MONTREAL LINKUP ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM

The Key to Consistently Successful Events

Event hosts put considerable time, effort and care into their events, and must be able to count on their guests to attend. The effort of the hosts is what makes all of the events possible, so it's crucial that we all respect the hosts, keep our commitments, and show up as planned.

When people consistently keep their commitments, the results are wonderful: great events, great fun, great connections with people. That's the whole point.

To ensure that we all have confidence in the events and in each other, Linkup has developed a system for tracking flaky or inconsiderate behavior, and we have no hesitation about dropping members who are persisently flaky or inconsiderate.

Accountability Tracking System

Here's how the accountability tracking system works:

  • The entire system is based on a moving window of your 10 most recent events, either as guest or host.

  • If you've been guest or host at fewer than 10 events total, your current total number of events is used for the window.

  • Your previous history, good or bad, gradually moves out of the window of your 10 most recent events.

  • Thus, the system is based entirely on patterns, not instances, and your previous history must move out of the window of your 10 most recent events for your rating to change.

    Cancellations & Flake Factors

Only the host of each event knows the sensitivity of their event to cancellations and no-shows. Therefore, the host decides whether the event requires cancellation more than 48 hours in advance, and the host decides whether you are reported as a no-show.

If a host reports you as a no-show for an event you committed to attend, or you cancel for an event that is sensitive to last-minute cancellations, a flake factor is added to your profile, up to a maximum of 4. If you ever get more than four of flake factors, you are automatically deleted from Linkup, and blocked from re-applying.

Those who frequently cancel wreak havoc on event attendance levels, and cause disappointment and distress for both hosts and guests. Therefore cancellations, no matter how long before the event, lower your rating as a proportion of the number of events.

    Your Personal RSVP Rating

As a member you have a personal RSVP rating, which is based first of all on the number of times you've canceled proprotional to the number of times you've RSVP'd. Examples:

    1) RVSPs: 10 | Cancellations: 5 | RSVP Rating: 50%

    2) RSVPs: 10 | Cancellations: 1 | RSVP Rating: 90%

    3) RSVPs: 8 | Cancellations: 7 | RSVP Rating: 12.5%

The Flake Factor is on a scale of 1 to 5. Therefore, each Flake Factor knocks your RSVP rating down by 20%. Examples:

    1) RSVPs: 10 | Cancellations: 0 | Flake Factor: 1 | RSVP Rating: 80%

    2) RSVPs: 10 | Cancellations: 0 | Flake Factor: 3 | RSVP Rating: 40%

    3) RSVPs: 10 | Cancellations: 5 | Flake Factor: 2 | RSVP Rating: 10%

Because what matters is patterns of behavior, not individual instances, this calculation system displays "TBD" and gives you the benefit of the doubt, that is functions as though your rating were 100%, until you've sent in 5 or more RSVPs. At that point, the direct calculation takes over, and your RSVP rating is fully operative.

Your RSVP rating is visible to you, and visible to the host of an event for which you have RSVP'd, but not visible to anyone else.

Your RSVP rating is, in effect, your social reputation within the group. You will definitely be judged by your RSVP rating, and if you don't preserve that rating, you may find yourself excluded from some of the best events. We encourage you to carefully maintain and preserve your reliabiity rating.

We feel very strongly that this system is both necessary and ultimately helpful to everyone in the group, because we all want to have confidence in each other, and be part of a group we can all truly count on.
